A Nassau County judge certified the election of Republican Jack Martins on Saturday as the winner in the Seventh state Senate District over incumbent Democrat Craig Johnson, meaning Republicans have almost certainly regained control of the state Senate for the next two years.

“The Johnson-Martins race is certified,” Justice Ira Warshawsky ruled in the state Supreme Court in Mineola, upholding the final ballot count that had Martins winning by 451 votes out of more than 85,000 ballots cast.

“I am looking forward to working with my Senate colleagues,” Martins said outside court. He said the monthlong recount of ballots had been difficult, but that it was important for people to know that the legal process had been followed in such a close race.

Johnson’s attorney, Steven Schlesinger, said he was considering an appeal, but Johnson released a statement later saying he would appeal
