Cuomo unveils team of top advisers

  • Steve Cohen, secretary to the governor ()
ALBANY -- With three weeks to go before he is inaugurated as New York's 56th governor, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced the top aides who will guide his Cabinet.
The list is a mix of men and women, old friends and new, that does a fair job reflecting the diversity of the state. The appointments were made with the help of transition teams Cuomo announced last month following his election.
Cuomo will draw four senior aides from his current office, including Steve Cohen, who will hold the top job of secretary to the governor. Ben Lawsky, another close Cuomo confidant who -- unlike Cohen -- worked on the campaign, will hold the title of chief of staff. The men's jobs could overlap because the duties are yet to be strictly defined.
Cuomo is naming two men who served his father Mario during his own years as governor.
They are Andrew Zambelli, who was secretary to Mario Cuomo before founding a communications research firm, and Howard Glaser, who also served the younger Cuomo when he was federal secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the 1990s.
Cuomo named Yrthya A. Dinzey-Flores as chief diversity officer. She comes from the Toyota Foundation, and has a background in philanthropy and community relations.
Gov. David Paterson said this recently created position would be critical to keeping some of his work to increase participation by minority- and women-owned businesses in the state, and some Hispanic leaders pressured Cuomo to fill the office with a person of Hispanic descent.
"I am privileged to welcome such a diverse group of extraordinary talent to help our administration take on the challenge of restoring our state government and making it work for the people once again," Cuomo said in a statement.
