The picture in the state Senate is getting even clearer as Republican Bob Cohen is slated to concede tomorrow to Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer, D-Mamaroneck, Westchester County.
Cohen has scheduled a 10 a.m. press conference tomorrow at his White Plains campaign office to make the announcement, according to a source close to his campaign.
Republicans and Democrats in recent weeks had expected that Oppenheimer would likely pull it out. But with Republicans picking up a Buffalo seat and likely a Long Island seat, the GOP is prepared to head into the new year with a 32-30 seat majority.
Democrats are vowing to seek a hand recount in the Long Island seat, currently held by Democratic Sen. Craig Johnson. But if Johnson’s fortunes don’t change, Republican Jack Martins will win the seat and lift Republicans back to the majority they held for more than 40 years until 2009.
In the Westchester race, Cohen trailed Oppenheimer by about 400 votes with about 1,000 absentees to still count as of Friday evening—and the remaining ones were largely from White Plains, a Democratic stronghold.
Cohen didn’t want to undertake the costly task at taxpayer expense of a hand recount, the source said.
