As Rep. Charlie Rangel faces a slew of guilty counts on House ethics charges, the political world is waiting to see what happens when he faces the full committee -- and I have to tell you my email inbox isn't exactly jammed with statements in his support.
“It’s obviously a sad situation to experience," Governor-Elect Andrew Cuomo told reporters in Rochester today.
"It’s important that people have full faith in the integrity of public service, so it’s painful to watch, but we’ll see what happens at the end of the process,” Cuomo continued.
Politicians across the country have handled Rangel with kid gloves -- ok, maybe asbestos gloves -- since the beginning of his spectacular fall from the powerful head of the House Ways and Means Committee to a man who claims he's too broke to hire a lawyer.
Cases in point: The donations returned to him by various pols and the endless speculation of who would and wouldn't attend Rangel's big 80th birthday bash/fundraiser at The Plaza earlier this year.
Rangel does, however, still have his defenders: Among them, Rep. Bobby Scott of Virginia, who wrote (as you can read below) that while Rangel may have erred, the circumstances of his case don't warrant an official reprimand.
